Duncan Swim Team's learn-to-swim Programs

 

The Duncan Swim Team subscribes to Swimming / Natation Canada (SNC)'s National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) and its Appropriate Athlete Development (AAD) model for long term development in sport and physical activity, in its entirety.

All DST Staff are trained and certified through the NCCP, are members of the Canadian Swim Coaches Association (CSCA), and meet the Swimming / Natation Canada / Swim BC coach registration requirements; including but not limited to: NCCP Making Ethical Decisions, Coaches Association of Canada (CAC)’s Safe Sport Training, and Respect in Sport Coach Program, registered annually.

NCCP AAD phase: Active Start & FUNdamentals
Weekly Program commitment: 1 – 3 water sessions per week
Season 1 @ Sept 28 – Feb 5  /  Season 2 @ Feb 8 – June 25

 

The Stingrays' Learn To Swim program is broken up into swim groups of like skill & commitment:

  • Active Start: 1 - 2 water sessions per week
    • NCCP AAD phase: Active Start
  • Stage 1: 1 - 3 sessions per week
    • NCCP AAD phase: Active Start & FUNdamentals
  • Stage 2: 1 - 3 sessions per week
    • NCCP AAD phase: FUNdamentals
  • Stage 3: 1 - 3 sessions per week
    • NCCP AAD phase: FUNdamentals
  • Fit4Life: 1 - 2 sessions per week

 

Entrance into each of the above levels of the Duncan Swim Team require specific knowledge and skills so all placements are assigned by the Stingrays Staff.  Skills for each level is specific, but not limited to each swimmer's physical, mental, technical, tactical, strategic, social, and emotional development.  Swimmers must also work well in a group environment in consideration of their teammates.

 


 


 

 

The Duncan Swim Team has a rich history which includes the amalgamation of the Duncan Swim Team Society and the Cowichan Stse’elhtun Swim Club Society in 2007.

 

The Cowichan Stse’elhtun Swim Club was a swimming program created by our Team’s Head Coach Leanne Wilkinson (Sirup) in partnership with Cowichan Tribes in 2004.  “Stse’elhtun” is a Hul’q’umi’num’ word meaning Salmon.  Pronunciation: Stuh / ehl / tuhn

 

The Stingrays honor our Team’s history with custom artwork created for the Stse’elhtun

by local Salish Artist Qwiyahwult-hw (Stuart Pagaduan) of Cowichan Tribes.

  • *new* C Group: 2 - 4 water sessions per week
  • *new*  B Group: 4 - 6 sessions per week
  • *new*  A Group: 5 - 8 sessions per week
  • *new*  National Group: 7 - 11 sessions per week

Entrance into each of the above levels of the Duncan Swim Team require specific knowledge and skills so all placements are assigned by the Stingrays Staff in combination with the Swimmer's proven commitment.  Skills for each level is specific, but not limited to each swimmer's physical, mental, technical, tactical, strategic, social, and emotional development.  Swimmers must also work well in a group environment in consideration of their teammates.

 

COSTS:

  1. Annual:
    • $166 SwimBC Competitive Registration Fee (01sept-31aug)
  2. Annual:
    • $50 DST Account Activation Fee
  3. Annual: Swimming Dues
    • dependent on Group
    • Annual Dues can be paid in monthly installments with the season running mid sept to mid July.  Monthly dues are invoiced for 15th of each month, payable prior to that month start

Solo Stingrays

“Solo Stingrays”: The DST Staff are available for private / semi private sessions (max 2 swimmers of similar ability). Cost and scheduling is dependent upon CAC rental and Staff availability.

 

Prerequisite: none.

Program development is at discretion of attending DST Staff member in consultation with the family. Goals for participation will be discussed, as will the timelines & duration with the attending DST Staff member. 

 

 

To note: the Solo Stingrays program is semi independent from the DST general membership. 

General Information, DST Consent Forms, and Membership policies are applicable. DST Staff member has the full discretion of program creation and implementation. “See Yourself Swimming” trial is applicable upon entering the DST general program.
